I love Death Note, but Light's design was honestly shite. He looked like some random High Schooler and didn't look distinguishable at all. Sure that was sort of the point, but it's anime - it's not supposed to be realistic.
I tried making him look more interesting by adding some defining features instead. This would elevate the anime to a higher score

Nope, that's not true. Take JoJo for example. If Joeseph Joestar was some random highschooler who just liked to relax, people wouldn't like the series as much. Anime in general improve when the characters are more interesting. Light not having a captivating backstory is one of its main flaws accoring to many, and I'm inclined to agree.
