The Eclipse happened in 1996-1997. I doubt there was anyone translating Berserk back then, or if there was you likely couldn't just go and download scanlations for it like you can now. The official English version didn't start coming out until 2003 (which seems to be the year a lot of English manga started coming out).
I was alive back then but I was only a few years old and definitely didn't even know what Berserk was. Don't remember when I started reading it. I remember reading it in high school so some time in the mid 00s. 2007 or so probably.

I didn't start reading Berserk until a friend of mine got me into it in around '04/'05, but I had played the Dreamcast game well before, and actually thought the anime was a spinoff of the game at the time. With the way it ends, and basically says "read the manga if you want to know what happens next", the '97 anime might be the best commercial of all time.
Idea of Evil isn't even officially canon anymore.
Unrelated, but I just dipped into manga for the first time and just realised that Ive been missing out after reading berserk... Could someone post one of those charts with "essential manga" or some recommendations similar to berserk?

I've only been reading the manga since 2015 or so. Probably the most I've ever enjoyed reading a manga.
I still go back and reread Golden Age every now and then.

The whole boat thing is the length Guts n the gang where on it, it was the hiatus of the manga.
I started reading during the boat arc and endless hiatus. Berserk threads were more frequent but also pretty shit. Because people ran out of new material to talk about they just started shitposting and some retarted griffith apologist tripfag ruined every discussion and just started talking about how griffith did nothing wrong or about her personal issues in life.
I got spoiled about the eclipse before I started reading because it's hard to discuss berserk without mentioning the eclipse. It's still makes it one of the most horrifying things I've seen in anime and manga and hard for me to read through.
