You lack imagination. Of course Natsume would be happy to see Kabu like that but how things develop from there is completely in the air. If you think a sappy happy ending where the "is it really Kabu" question isn't explored is no good....then you are entirely free to come up with an alternative.
e.g. Kabu's save was corrupted, the result being that Kabu now has mental damage and partial memory loss.
