The very first episode of Charlotte, in which the main character shows the viewer his unique power and uses it to fuck around and cheat on tests and shit, is awesome. It's a sort of daydreamy wish fulfillment thing that I'd bet every one of you has had: Just having some secret cool ability that is subtle enough to not really be massively overpowered while still letting you live as comfortably as possible.
If the show stayed like the first episode, or if the protagonist evaded the others and they weren't able to prove he has powers (after which they could keep chasing him, trying to expose him for the rest of the series), the show would have been way cooler. It would have worked as a comedy, a slice of life, whatever. The genre shift that the actual show had into a lame monster of the week thing sucked. If an anime ever gets made that's just a guy owning his cool secret power and breezing through life, I hope it gets super successful so the chumps who ruined Charlotte with a genre shift can realize just how badly they messed up.

Those tend to have some dumb bullshit like being in a world where powers aren't particularly special, there's no reason not to tell others about your powers, you have a party of people who know about your power, etc.
Episode 1 of Charlotte takes place in what would be the real world except that the MC has a secret power that he uses to cheat on tests, impress girls, and all kinds of cool petty shit that fags like myself can relate to. He's also careful not to expose his powers and it's satisfying to see him get away with it. Isekai doesn't tend to have that kind of thing.

I barely remember it too. It starts with the MC being able to possess others for only a few seconds at a time and he does all kinds of cool shit with it, then he gets sent to gay knockoff x-men school where they instead hunt for others with powers to recruit them (first genre shift), then some really gay drama shit happens so the MC goes on a super gay drama-fueled self destruction bender that's resolved in an episode (second genre shift), then it turns out they have repressed memories and they can... Go back in time WOAAAH SO COOL (third genre shift) and then in the final episode the MC loses his shit and roams the earth stealing every single superpower that exists from every other human so that nothing cool can ever happen again (fourth genre shift).
The pacing is always terrible and every genre shift manages to be worse than the last, and it's extra fucked because the first episode where it's just one guy doing small scale cool shit had so much potential.

Nao is honestly the best that came from Charlotte.
Hope Maeda has learned from his mistakes and does a better job with Kamisama.
Limitless was like this, for a bit anyway, it's why I love that movie.

The impressive thing is that the lame monster of the week thing is still a way better direction than what they actually were going for. It's a twelve episode show, yet you can split it into five distinct parts, which are all progressively worse.

Clannad is a whole different beast anyway, and shouldn't be compared to this. There's a reason why they mostly only focus on Angel Beats + Charlotte + Kamisama. Main reason being those are anime originals and Clannad is a VN adaptation.
Charlotte is actually one of my favorite anime series. Yeah, it was rushed to hell, but it was still entertaining as fuck. The plot with the imouto is rarely mentioned in these threads but I remember being super captivated by it while watching, its great.
