Alright, let's stop beating around the bush. The KnY movie is on its trajectory to become the highest grossing film ever released in Japan. Knowing Aniplex, they'd probably be able to extend the screenings to a long time, 6 months to even a year, with all the money and connections they have.
Knowing Shinkai, this kind of reaction from him doesn't surprise me. Liz and the Blue Bird was a niche anime film that didn't seen as much success in Japan, and he still glorifies that movie. He also hoped that Your Name doesn't win when it was submitted to the Oscars for nomination. Shinkai as a person doesn't appear chase after fame, he's just one of the many Japanese creators throwing a dice and just happens to struck gold.
But like any other games of chances, there's always just somebody else with better luck than you. The condition, the timing, and the audience was right for Kimetsu no Yaiba and so right now it's merely reaping that opportunity.

That its probably objectively B-tier, right? The quality to commercial success correlation is like a partial curve, where things that are terrible are unsuccessful and unpopular, things that are genuinely great and complex are pretty successful and popular, and things that are very popular are generally mediocre and serviceable. There are exceptions to these but I figure its a pretty good guideline.

I'd only watched Infinity War prior to Endgame and I thought both were pretty uninteresting. Actually, Endgame was worse than Infinity War because it had less Thanos, who was the only entertaining character in the whole movie.

Yes, probably. BD usually takes a year to release. In Promare’s case, the film continued to show in theaters because they did things like 4D versions and ones where people could cheer or something. Wouldn’t be surprised of KNY got a 4D version where you can smell Rengoku’s blood.
