There are four antagonists each with conflicting goals:
The Angels, who want to merge with their father Adam and start the Third Impact and destroy Earth to kill their enemy the Lilim (mankind), who are the children of Lilith.
SEELE, who wants to complete the Human Instrumentality Project by merging Adam and Lilith to activate the Third Impact to recreate the world and reign over mankind as gods.
Gendo Ikari, who is working with SEELE but seeks to hijack the Human Instrumentality Project so he can reunite with Yui at the cost of ending the world.
Lilith, who seeks to merge with Adam and start the Third Impact and return all life to the primordial soup of LCL, absorbing all their souls and becoming a God.
