When was the last time you supported the author by buying the official release? Was it any good or were the fan translations better?

i can't read japanese so fan scanlations will have to do.

Black General-san
The translation is a bit stiff in places and I think Cyan steam did a better job, especially with some of the wording
I take issue with using phrases like "fitbit champ" instead of "leg strength" on one of the shirts

it's obviously better than the later esl translation though

CSM, have the japanese and german first volume here. Translation of the german version is quite good.

I have sex with scanlator-kun’s sick mother every day in the hopes she’ll feel better

Toward the Terra. I feel paying for professional translation was the right call in this case. I had the raws but the writing was dense enough that slowing it down even more with my mediocre moon skills would have been tiresome.

Fan translations are terrible. Half of them are machine translated or translated from Korean/Chinese. Manga fans don't even know how low their standards are, as long as it is half readable they gulp it down.

I buy figures and other shit instead

I buy the official releases all the time. And then translate them. Official releases are better than my works, but honestly better me do it than some MTL SEAmonkey have their way with it.

as if """officials""" are any better with their interjected social commentary.

SEAmonkey detected

keep shoveling trash into your mouth, i'm sure you'll keep having a great time

Buying the official japanese release? Less than an hour ago.

I try my best to support author/artist. Creative field doesn't pays the best. If something isn't licensed in english, i go out of my way to buy the french releases (if they exist). I don't necessarily look for "better" localization. It's just a way to support the artists in a way that is also comprehensible to me. I did learn french to buy their releases as well lol.

FYI, most authors don't see any money from overseas sales. At best, you support them indirectly by making their IP / name more valuable to the japanese publishers.
If you actually want to support artists, you have to import the japanese books. That's what they get royalties on.

It's hilarious when the group in question is for once honest about it and people start bitching about MTL, like half of the shit they read wasn't google translated.

Last ones were dungeon meshi, Fudatsuki no Kyoko-chan and Trump.

I bought a copy of Kaguya-Sama, I haven't opened it out the wrapping though and it's a japanese copy, I just wanted to have it

>Still believing in this meme and not knowing how publishing works

Okay let me break it down. The licensors (considering it's an independent publisher) makes an offer to the to the publisher and the artist. After the initial licensing fee has been payed off, the author doesn't get anything unless the publishers recoups the licensing fee from the sales of their initial print run. Another print run, another fee. It's different for digital, they get royalties off every copy sold after a month I believe. Again you have to consider that the licenses expires after a certain period. Dark horse has been publishing berserk for like what? 20 years? They have had to renew their license multiple times since they are an independent publisher.

Literally never happened.

That's a nice fantasy world you live in. The artist has no say in the matter. Not one. Not everyone is Togashi.

Unless you can provide an actual source to back up your statement it's pointless. This is how all books are published and licensed overseas. Not just comics but anything book. Take a publishing class.

>Official releases are better than my works
Anything would be better than your work

Here's the word from a japanese author.
sekinamayu.com/buying-manga-in-english/

>If you read my post about Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan’s mangaka issue, it’s clear that the mangaka will always be at the bottom of the supply chain. They will always be the last person to receive fees. What’s even worse, they don’t have any say on how the publisher intends to do with their work.
>Isn’t that unfair?
>Well, it is. But that’s what stated in their contract.
>Same goes for the foreign rights. The mangaka no longer has the rights to their work when they get a manga deal. And that includes the foreign rights.

Should I take her word over yours? I wonder.

I bought the first several volumes of Witch Hat Atelier and the first volume of Houseki no Kuni recently. WHA is fine I think except that one of the characters has a weird name and the official translation uses Agott while the scanlation uses Agathe. The official translation's name is closer to what the katakana says but it's still weird. Houseki no Kuni's release isn't very good for a variety of reasons and I probably won't get any more volumes of it.

I also bought a couple Bisco Hatori series (one of them because there are no scanlations or piratable official digital releases of it).

I have some of the re-releases of Nihei's works, like Blame and Abara. The whole run of Sidonia and Blame movie artbook.
All imported from Japan and in Japanese of course. When buying western releases, you support the western publisher, not the mangaka. Even when buying in Japanese, you're mostly supporting some giant like Kodansha.

No retort? If I'm wrong then I'm wrong. I can take it. Show me a source that states the opposite of what I've said. Because I would prefer to live in your world, quite honestly.

i bought all 3 volumes of hitomi-chan is shy with strangers after the author said he had to get surgery. later this year i plan on buying every volume to the original gunnm.

I buy finnish translations of couple of manga and the quality is actually pretty good. Shame that the quantity isn't there. It's mostly shonen and yaoi-bait shoujo

I bought some yotsuba books, they were nice
