when it comes to more regular cars, less mechanics will be confident with them and spare parts are less plentiful. I would also prefer to buy something european just because.

Because they are. You are a massive country and therefore need cheap transport. Everything is designed with the lowest common denominator in mind so it appeals and is affordable to the biggest group of purchasers possible. Your home grown cars are for lugging fat families from one mall to the other, that's it. And pick-up trucks - wtf is that about? In Euroland the only people who drive pick-ups are either tribal-tattooed doormen or pikeys in a white flatbed Transit. No exceptions. No American car since the 1970s has anything approaching style or class.

I'll agree with you that most people don't need a big truck, its mostly compensation for small dicks. But if you live on a farm or out in the boonies and need to haul shit around trucks are useful.
