What kinds of resources did you use, and how long did it take to get at least to the reading/understanding part?

I live in a poorfag country that didn't really have JP resources about 13 years ago when I started studying by myself, so I just got one of those self-study books and learnt hiragana and some basic words. Then I got into uni, but the professors and their classes were pretty crap, so after graduation I only knew katakana, quite a lot of vocabulary and basic grammar and katakana/kanji. I couldn't speak or read anything longer than three connected sentences. Reading fanfiction on pixiv using rikaikun and jisho helped me out the most actually, especially since this kind of writing doesn't usually involve complex words or phrases. Those are basically the only two online resources I've ever used, unless I googled some grammar issue I wasn't sure of.
The first raw manga I read was Mononoke and I think that happened about one year into my defective official studies. I found it pretty difficult at the time. The first novel I read after three years of uni, but that was basically me not bothering with every single unknown word, kanji or phrase. I watched my first raw movie after about four years of study simply because I hadn't found subs for it. It was The Bandage Club, cute movie and nice soundtrack.
All in all, I'd say if you study the language seriously every day for about four hours or so, you'd be able to make it in four years or maybe less. I can't give you a good estimate because I ended up learning more on my own but based on the stuff I was taught in uni, which could have definitely taken less than three years. Sorry for being pretty useless, just learn hiragana and katakana and then look for Nihongo Shoho. Once you feel you've mastered quite a bit of grammar, try reading some easy to read manga, like Chi's Sweet Home.

It's almost even in numbers, but the huge difference is in quality. English publishers are focusing too much on trashy isekai and the few good publishers don't have the money to publish more mangos because english readers don't give a shit about original mangas, they only buy the mainstream stuff. I mean do you sometimes look at the "show your collection" threads ? Even on Zig Forums everyone is only buying mainstream shit.
In France we support the authors and that's why french publishers are willing to take risks and publish more obscur stuff. Of course it cost money, but if one day you don't like reading mangas anymore you can sell them and make about 80% of your money back, or even more if like Kamui Den the manga go out of print and the author is against reprinting it

It's not that the french make up more than half of manga sales outside of Japan, it's that english licensed manga market is smaller than even the italian licensed manga market.
