Because there was no finality to the series. It got cancelled right in the middle of an arc. Not ever knowing how the story was going to play out combined with all merch/anime/volume re-prints getting canned. It's a gnawing feeling, kind of like losing something important and knowing you will never find it again. That said, the manga totally deserved cancellation. There was no path forward. The writer has creative control and is going to prison, the artist wanted nothing more to do with the product for obvious reasons. It was a PR nightmare. The whole situation sucks, especially because Jump is going to completely ignore the series for the rest of time due to the bad PR.

You don’t usually buy the plot and characters of a manga, you buy rights for distribution and for printing it on your magazine for x years. Mangakas and artists still hold some rights and a minimum control over their work, not the ideal but the magazine can’t take your ideas, characters and plot and give it to another person, that would be illegal. Now he could have sold Act age to the magazine but who in their right mind would want to spend money in a cursed manga? And again, the guy was probably so obnoxious that no matter his talent, no one tried to help him.
