Why is it so rare to find flawed yet ethical characters in manga willing to debate philosophy? It's always either immoral edgy "the world revolves around my ideals" characters, "my arbitrary values are better than your arbitrary values" MCs, glorified cowards like Shinji, or Mr. Perfects who can force their values through sheer talent most of the time until the inevitable climax of the story (specifically, I'm thinking of Vash with this one, which to be fair is the entire point of his character).
Why can't someone just be normal yet ethical?

Where is he glorified? The story in universe paints him as a coward and his big catchphrase was "I mustn't run away" (even thiugh he didn't for a lot of the show)

I kinda like that he can't solve everything. The boy with the scar over his forehead had way more going on than just being shy and a bit too intimate with people interested in him. A simple hug and telling him he has people to lean on didn't fix him, and neither did finding a friend in ethics class.

It was more the breakdown from being forced in a bad way to break his rules.
In doing that he basically turned himself into a villain all the way back to the beginning of his teaching. And from that point on, to be good he had to give that treatment more and more to other students.
