I don't think he was backpedalling, I doubt Seo ever intended to have the MC killed off, as he probably couldn't replace him the same way he did Fuuka1.

It's more that they can't really have the series proceed without a character in the MC's role, or replace him with another one.
The girls, who're 90% lusting after the MC, would end up looking like shallow sluts if they just ended up going after another guy, and if there was a new MC and they didn't want him you'd lose the wish-fulfilment element of the series
