I appreciate the style through which the story is told. It's a nice little horror adventure that spearheads numerous stories throughout many generations. Although one of my favorite parts about Phantom Blood in recent years is that, even divorced from the parts that follow, it's a relatively complete narrative.
You've got brain vampires, sunlight kung fu, themes of darkness and light, two brothers fighting; I just think it's cool, and it's all so neatly wrapped up in a gothic package.
