It's something like "leading to death." Normally means sending someone off to the next life as in a funeral, but it can also mean literally sending people to death by killing them. Calling Frieren Frieren the Slayer at the end of Ch 17 was a title drop.

The double meaning of the title adds to the charm of the series. Even casual chapters like these have a heavy feeling. Maybe we'll see this monk again in the epilogue, some thousands of years from now, honoring a Frieren that's already passed. and maybe, getting ready to take a long nap as well himself.

It's not depression though, the feel is more unique than that. Very contemplative, enormous lifespan differences and things coming to an end but lots of hope and new things getting made as well. The elves have a unique vantage point and are mostly extinct but have found ways to cope with it and can still enjoy the world. It's interesting in confronting the passage of time so directly vs most works which focus in great depth on just tiny portions rather then months, years, and decades sweeping past.
