I know last season was kind of weak but this show was terrible. Completely wasted most of it's characters. Shitty pacing. Abhorrent ending. Seriously one of the worst anime I've watched this year since it went out of it's way to be so exceptionally shitty. A half baked waifubait character doesn't make a show good.

It took them three years for them to be able to get back to the wreckage and find Jill's laptop where the backup was stored. I'd say being dead and separated from his cute waifu for three years is enough of a bittersweet heroic sacrifice. Plus, Natsume was able to mature so much in those three years specifically because she was 100% certain that Kaburagi was dead and didn't waste her time on false hope that he would return, which made the reunion after so long that much sweeter.
We got the badassery of a heroic sacrifice moment AND a happy ending for both of them.
