He clearly had a backstory that Kubo didn't show us. At some point he saw the damn SOUL KING and became terrified of it. We don't know if that was before or after betraying the Soul Society, but at any point it was worth showing. It may have been what shaped his entire character, and really what an adventure; in what damn situation would this average Captain go up to the Royal Palace and meet the Soul King?

But Aizen was just a captain like the rest of the Gotei 13 yet he can effortlessly clown them all except for Yamamoto because...?
