In regards to the six paths, they're actually what happens when you add the senju's (yang) physical energies to the sharingan's (yin) mental powers; it's the hax powers automatically cast with the body instead of the eyes. All the powers are specialized versions of the 'bringing genjutsu into reality' that the sharingan evolves into. The mechanical spirit summon (susanoo) is specialized into three: real mechanical equipment you can grow from your body (Ashura path), summoning a completely separate being from yourself (animal path), and the spiritual hell god (hell path). The whole genjutsu sword that physically transports you and the 'suck someone's mind' sharingan genjutsu it was derived from as well as the whole summoning black flames or summoning a portal kamui is divided into two, deconstructing and absorbing the physical chakra (pretha path) or the ability to completely rip chakra off someone's body as a whole and deconstruct information from the mind (human path) which is also the power of the hell god from naraka path, gedo mazo's spirit dragon chains and the black rods a la ashura path. The gravity powers that can push anything (deva path) is just a side effect of being able to use any elemental chakra that comes with the rinnegan.

It goes with the early lore of the sage of 6 paths being the first to see/decipher chakra and teaching everyone else how to manipulate it. The aliens were byakugan users who saw how chakra worked and eating the god tree awakens the rinnesharingan and allows you to use chakra automatically without having to learn it. Kaguya gave birth to the sage of 6 paths with the rinnegan who's the first that can automatically use chakra from birth and he taught others how to use and mold chakra they weren't born to perceive. The sharingan which it devolved into still allows the user to interface with chakra, both being able to input chakra (recognize genjutsu/enhanced perception that lets you memorize hand signs) and output chakra (allows you to mold someone else's chakra using the eyes and distort their perception). It's like their universe's version of telepathic eyes.
