Anime or manga? I've heard mixed opinions about Oshii and what he did to the anime. Some say it became so popular because of him but others say he ruined what it was supposed to be.
I'm leaning towards the manga because it's the original but is the anime significantly better? At the moment I don't have to do both so I would rather pick one of the two.
I feel like the anime writers really didn't gasp the story well at all most of the time. Way too many weird unexplainable shit is going on plots that come off as awkward, while the manga always treated things with a comedy twist.
And the anime totally dropped the early plot line of Lum getting in the way of Ataru and Shinobu's relationship and actively ruining it for a while. The anime just jumped right into Ataru and Lum being a thing with Shinobu broken up.

>mixed opinions about Oshii Imagine not liking what Oshii "did" to the manga. The anime original episodes are some of the best in the show, and Beautiful Dreamer is a whole different topic. The adapted episodes tend to cut out a lot for time, but you should obviously pick up both.

See? Mixed opinions, I can't decide.

'both' has been a fairly consistent opinion itt

And I've already said I only have time for one of them.

>actual hack mangaka who's rehashed the same characters/stories over 4 decades vs >genius experimental highly rated director FTFY, yea tough choice indeed.
You could do the "simple" way and just flip a coin; have one option be heads and the other option be tails and whatever you end up with is what you'll do
True that's an option. I tried watching a bit of a random episode on Youtube and read a few manga previews on Amazon. I found the anime funnier, though it could be because I chose better episodes. I may go with the anime. I can't even find the manga anywhere so I would probably have to buy it.

I'd honestly go with the anime. Though the anime did many different things than the manga, so much so that it's pretty much considered its own separate entity. I find the anime easier to pick up and drop due to just how episodic the episodes are, the voice acting is great, the soundtrack is fantastic, and overall the comedy is delivered very well. It may not be a faithful adaptation of the manga, but it's a great anime. Plus the first opening will forever be one of my favorite anime openings ever. youtu.be/b2Jiic05C0M
