It's very gay in the novel, but the adaptation won't be able to show anything more intense than holding hands. Still, Hua Cheng's entire reason for being is that he's in love with Xie Lian and worships him, and they aren't shy about implying that.
Novels are allowed, but there are restrictions on shows. To get around this, adaptations make them friends or sworn brothers, because there are a lot of Chinese fujos with money.

I might be biased but the romance in the novel is super cheesy, there won't be anything explicit in the adaptation but expect lots of handholding and the like. You will get the overall feel for it if you watch episode one, just give it a try.
