Why is Steins;Gate considered one of the best/highest rated anime? Why is the show good objectively? I understand that it has tranny waifu, 2channel reference, dr pepper etc., but in what ways is the show well made? I don't understand why it's so lauded, as a production it's just average on all fronts.

It's a solid adaptation of a much better VN, compared to how VN's are usually adapted S;G got most all the notes right.
Also no one really had a 'magic spell' to fix everything, while it did gloss over a few things just play the vn to get the rest

Because the VN, of which it is based off of, is a very strong and good story involving something most people have some kind of interest into. The anime is good at hitting most every high note of the series without going too far off course unless you count how much time they spent on Myushi's death rehappenings.
They adapted a good story, and given the media it is in, goes a long way.

Every character is close enough to reality to make it be a believable fantasy. Okabae thinks he is crazy after time leaping at first
The consperisy theory stuff works and is loosely based off other things in reality
Most people have a general idea of what time travel is and the things surrounding it.
The characters all have problems that don't 100% revolve around them and time travel
The story never tries to go too big in the main show always leaving the way way bigger stuff touched at and not broken down to the last detail
