Miyazaki is a traditional Showa conservative, an enormous contrarian, and a horrible family man. Just listen to the people who have to work with him - they hate his guts.
His family hates him, his staff hates him, and his constant attacks on every project he's not directly involved in has turned a lot of opinion against him. A lot of people are now analyzing his greatest works closer and finding out he actually didn't have the commanding influence and creative control people once were led to believe.
He's still one of the best directors of anime movies of all time, but that doesn't magically make him above reproach, and the man was *definitely* an asshole to his family for literally no fucking reason.

Quite a few things, some of which are believable rumors from close family friends/family members, and others are actual events we know about.
He treated Goro like shit. He constantly told his son that his art was "bad" and that he should "give up on his dreams" of following in his father's line of work. This is something we know to be fact.
From Goro, we know that Miyazaki's wife is not a fan of how he treated his family. Goro has never spoken in further depth, but speculation from close friends/pieced together information is that Miyazaki might have been abusive. There's this interview where Goro talked about "visiting his mother" when he was in middle school, which implies she either physically split from Miyazaki or she was at the hospital.
Miyazaki and his wife had only one kid, and when asked once why he stopped at only one, Miyazaki got *super* pissed off and stormed out of the interview. Originally, we thought this was because Miyazaki is just a super private guy, but some people close to the family have been saying for a while the marriage has been rocky for a long time - which could further imply that he wanted more kids, but she didn't want any more with him.
Miyazaki also famously blocked Goro from certain jobs/projects in the industry early in his son's career.
