I think my biggest problem with this show is that it's set up like it's supposed to be a murder mystery but you are literally told who the murderer is from the 1st episode. I only watched the first 10 episodes or so but I felt like there was just no tension to keep me interested

Wouldn't say that, but from all the "3deep5u" entry level anime stuff I watched this one holds up the best.
I watched it once at 15 and once at 25 and both times it holds up really well. Meanwhile stuff like Elfenlied I watched with 15 to jerk off and thought it's a deep meaningful anime and later realized it's just bad written pseudo intellectual fap bait. Many of my old friends felt the same way when revisiting it.

Well, it is not a murder mystery, it is a story about characters getting their entire lives fucked in the ass by the devil and responding in different ways. Its alright.

Not really, music is awesome and the plot is good, the entire show is carried by it, to the point at we could neglect the shit element like characterization, character design (im fine with CLAMP design actually) and the storytelling.
Show is a fucking clusterfuck, was almost failed at production. But somehow being forgiven by the fans because nakige element from Jun Maeda.
Pacing have a problem, and storytelling (like there are a lots of thing that introduced in the series became an unsolved mystery till the end, which is a boomer).

I've read the manga and it's definitely good, even great, but it's nowhere near what people make it out to be.
I love Urasawa; Pluto is amazing and 20thCB is my favorite manga, but Monster was just meh in comparison.
