I identified with Okabe's suffering in Stein's Gate, but he was not a stupid self-absorbed idiot. Hard to feel sympathy for someone's suffering when a lot of it is self-inflicted.

Series with actually intelligent MCs/writing tend to get significantly less attention than the ones that don't.

From an entertainment point of view, intelligent MCs tend to be less interesting by default, because it requires actual attention from the viewer.

What I'm trying to say is that it really doesn't matter how smart the character is, but rather how entertaining they are.
