It's a reference to this famous English sculpting, The Sleeping Children. The woman who commissioned the statue, Ellen-Jane Robinson, tragically lost her husband and her only 2 daughters within the span of 3 years. The work of art is currently in a cathedral in Litchfield. In the same way Ellen-Jane lost everything, Denji will lose everything as well. Everybody says that Fujimoto's writing style is lovecraftian, or even faustian, this proves that he's actually Aeschylus-like. What could you expect from the master himself.
