20th Century Boys Ending

Were you satisfied? Did it actually make sense? For me i feel that it dropped the ball hard. Who the fuck was the "first" friend that came back after fukubei died? I figured it was Kenji but that theory got btfo when they decided to reintroduce him. And the last conversation before the UFO falls on Sado/Friend/Kenji makes it even more confusing. Was Kenji actually involved with Friend the whole time? I just feel like a lot of characters were wasted and the mystery fell apart. Discuss.

It's another shit ending by Urasawa. I read it ages ago so I can't recall the details, but all I remember is that I expected it to be a whodunnit kind of deal with the friend's identity and it ended up being someone who was pulled out of nowhere.

for me
Pre-Time skip = 10/10
Time skip 1 = 8/10
Time skip 2 = 5/10

I'd probably put time skip 1 at a solid 9/10 and lower pre time skip to a 9/10 but otherwise you're right.

About right. Time skip was great since you really didn't expect it, but the second one turned it to a complete horseshit where you just wanted it to end already since all you did was wait Kenji to deus ex machina the situation off.

That retarded VR simulation was the worst plot device I have ever seen in manga. It serves no purpose other than to make the main character have a feel good moment in the end.

for me the problems were much more noticeable right away after the first time skip.

Pre-Time skip = 9/10
Time skip 1 = 6/10
Time skip 2 = 5/10

I actually enjoyed it. I was really hoping for an unreliable narrator twist with the lie of 1971 which we sort got but it ended up being all according to keikaku which ruined it. Friend/Fukubei really needed to be more insane and have false memories. His motivations ended up being "I wanna be evil so people will pay attention to me", which makes sense but if all you're going off of your entire life is that, you aren't a compelling villain anymore.

no it was trash

The manga went to shit when the daughter became a teenager Mary Sue and the retarded VR machine was introduced. Urasawa is an hack.

so, kenji was bad?

Maybe. Maybe not. It was left up in the air because Urisawa realized there was no way for the manga to have a satisfying conclusion with the way he set it up. Who was the "first friend" that we saw at the ending after Fukubei died? No one fucking knows.

Friend used childish ideas as his weapons. Makes sense such person would have childish reasons to act as he did.

When does it start getting good? The first couple of volumes are weak shit, unlike Monster and Pluto.

I was fine with her being a "mary sue" because it was established that she was special from the get go. What i'm not fine with was Fukubei being a fraud, which makes it even weirder that Kanna was able to do the shit she did considering her dad didn't actually have ESP or any sort of special powers at all. Did they experiment on her in the womb? Did fukubei ever actually even bend spoons with ESP or was it another trick? Why did the Kanna plot get dropped right when it was picking up? Why didn't friend ever even talk to Kanna? It seemed important to him during the first time skip and then he just forgot about his daughter entirely.
Still, that makes him not a compelling villain by the time the end of the series happens and you know it. Also, who was the "first friend" at the end of the series? A ton of shit doesn't add up and never will because of that weak sauce ending. The ball was dropped.

It actually get worse and worse.
If you didn't like the beginning, drop it.

Wasn't the first friend Fukubei, followed by Katsumata?

Regarding Kanna, the second Friend handwaved her abilities by saying he used some kind of drug on her mother while she was pregnant.

>Katsumata
No idea who the fuck that even is and i just finished the manga last night. Fukubei was the "first friend", as in he was the dude who came up with the concept but at some point he seems to have dropped it because the friend who gets crushed by the UFO with Sado and Kenji was a different person who was "friend" first.
Huh. Guess it was just some one off thing. The more i think about this manga, the more i start to dislike it with the ridiculous amount of red herrings that lead absolutely nowhere.

Yeah like says, at least that's what I think. But there's a distinction between quality and enjoyment, the batshit shit that it becomes later on might actually entertain you, but I don't think it's nearly as good as the well constructed first part.

Uhmmm, you did read the epilogue, 21st Century Boys, right?

that's when is supposedly to be good lol, just drop it

Wait there is an epilogue? or are you talking about the the 8 pages where Kenji says he isn't a ghost?

Shit i should've read your post. Don't spoil me you stupid nigger im downloading it right now.

There is an epilogue series.

Oh, no, I mean the last volume epilogue.
You didn't finish the story yet.

In my opinion the series is pretty good overall, although it dips at the end. This last volume kinda saves it.

Fuck shogun fuck kanna fuck post time skip kenji fuck God
Pre time skip= 9/10
After time skip 1= 6/10
Time skip 2=3/10

FUCK URASAWA FUCKING HACK

I don't recommend 20th Century Boys. The concept is very interesting and the events of the story are a fun ride, but ultimately it's stretched out to a tedious length especially in the last couple volumes. Don't think I'll ever understand why it's ranked so high

>ranked so high
It is? That's kind of interesting. The only reason i ended up reading it was a thread i saw here weeks ago that included a panel of Friend with the bag mask. It intrigued me. I also wouldn't recommend it either though. It's a good ride when it comes down to it.
