They've been around for centuries. They're not going anywhere anytime soon. While most modern ones are crap, the protagonist from the Modern World* is transported to another world that works on different rules is a fairly powerful literary device that lets you explore controversial concepts in your society in a safe way while still getting a contemporary take on them. Ignoring the potential and writing drivel doesn't mean said potential isn't there.
*Modern world here is of course relative to when the story is written, which I think is important to note.
