The main problem is the woman, not the husband, really.
She is supposed to become a full-time parent and give up any ideas of a career, while at the same time the media are telling her that she is her own person and that she shouldn't reduce herself to just a housekeeper.
Some women are happy to do that, but then you run into the issue that you now have one guy in the modern economy having to feed an entire family. And that's not easy.
There may be a little money per child, but that's nowhere enough to cover the bills.
So the family model of old just doesn't work in the modern world.

sadly it's true. I also heard that both men and women there don''t have kids because it has something to do with the retarded work culture there and how it is looked down upon to take a week of so for vacation, let alone a longer period of time for new mothers, though I don't know how much that's accurate.

What people should do is
a) make it socially acceptable for women to take pregnancy leave and then return to their old jobs
b) make kindergartens the norm so that you don't need a housewife (and potentially improve kindergarten management so it's not a nightmarish experience*)
and
c) reduce total working hours.
*I don't know Japanese kindergartens, but I've heard a bunch of terrible stories about kindergartens in my own country.

I've seen cases where children drop out of school and become hikikomori. Luckily there are organizations and groups set up by ex-hikikomori and help those children and also some type of school where they can study from home/come to school whenever they feel like, don't know all the details. Still, Japan needs to work on their education system in regards to that, but I feel like this is just an East Asian thing in general.
