Has an anime ever had a good filler before?

How come no anime has good fillers? Ignore the fact they aren't canon, has one ever had good writing in it?

G8 one piece is great

Some of Gintama filler

No. The entire point of filler is that it's supposed to suck so that the studio can still get money from the producer when they aren't committing all the way to main series production.

Most shounen have shit pacing built in by design, which is why it can go on for years and years without any progress made towards the protagonist's goal. Filler is like a natural extension of this.

There are fillers that improve upon the Source Material. It's not "created to suck" like you say. That's not the Japanese kind of mindset and you're missing the point.

DBZ is pure proof that filler improves a lot, look how barebones and boring Kai was.

The end of Noragami season 1 wasn't bad. Some of the later anime original stuff (particularly the later ones) from Gintama is still hilarious.

It sometimes happens. Hidamari Sketch for instance gave more screentime to some minor characters which was nice. CCS's original episodes were generally good. The problem is just that anime writers in general aren't very good. And this shows in originals a lot too. So they're given some source material and if they have to actually add to it they fail at it more often than not. There is a blurry line I'd say between filler and other kinds of anime original content. Plus I think the term filler is more likely to be applied to content that people don't like rather than content they do.

Seeing as how most of Sailor moon is filler. I'm gonna have to disagree with you OP. Anime can have great filler

Dragon ball had the one where Goku goes through that giant door into the demon realm
dragon ball Z had the driving episode
dragon ball super had baseball

You need to watch more anime

Actually I changed my mind about super, best super filler was the one with mr satan and the aliens

is saint seiya a meme? Looks like girly boy stuff

I'll say that Bleach did have some entertaining filler. One of my favorite ones was the movie making episode where they try to make money to rebuild the soul society. Honestly a funny and wholesome episode.

The only way for a filler to be good is if it spans an arc. Usually one episode fillers tend to focus on side characters and side story plot that feels like it could happen in canon but the manga just doesn’t want to dedicate a section to something as small as that. Like the naruto episode about kakashis mask . It’s a solid filler and seems like it could be cannon but there would be no point of putting it in the manga because it would just eat up time . Fillers that span a whole arc are usually shit because they want to drag it on for the sake of time . There would be no point in making it interesting because if you include certain characters you would have to retcon them in the later canon episodes

The only way for a filler to be good is if it doesn’t span an arc.*

I may be ridiculed for saying this, but I really enjoyed the Bount arc in bleach. The rest of the filler arcs were shit tho, soccer arc made me quit the anime.

The Zanpakuto Rebellion arc in Bleach was good and had so many new good designs.

I liked the world tournament fillers in DB that fleshed out some of the fighters more and let the pacing slow down a bit, very comfy to watch
Also the filler that had Tien having to beg a former victim of his for a dragon ball, it was a cool idea to have him come face to face with the reality of what he used to do and show that things aren't so simple that he could just forget the past when he switched sides

Watch more anime. Ashita no Joe has amazing anime-original material and that anime is extremely popular, which shows that you have zero knowledge outside of mainstream.

Dragon Ball filler was pretty good with some cool one off and world building episodes like the demon realm episode and his training on the lookout.

The one problem I have with the structure of the 22nd Tournament in the anime is that it keeps starting new days over and over and there's no rhyme or reason to it with at least two of those being during the same round (meanwhile the 22nd and 23rd were both done in one day), but it does work in favor of Tien's development which is good.

There has been good filler.

The Gohan fillers from when he was a child were fantastic.

There's an episode of One Piece during the flashback with Luffy, Ace, and Sabo as kids that I really enjoyed, and was actually surprised to find out it was filler. I don't remember much about it, other than the kids were digging holes all over the place, and Garp falls into one. It happened in such an unexpected way that I laughed my tits off.

They're the same thing over and over again.

>Gohan befriends someone/something
>Something happens, and Gohan is tragically separated from them, either through their death or other circumstances
>He moves on, slightly stronger from the experience

Pic unrelated? Muramasa's arc was better written than the actual show was and had some of the best action and characters out there. It was so good they had to shove in that shitty "Beast Swords" arc and tacked it on to the end of it so people would forget it before the shittier main storyline came back.

Muramasa was a good villain, the Koga fight was fantastic, and the overall asthetic of the swords was top tier.

Doom Tree from Sailor Moon?
Just because the villains were amusing and everyone had a good end?

>That Gintama segments when they just fuck around explaining how the anime industry works and after they just killed a lot of runtime with a fixed shot of the building the actual episode finally begins

Gets me everytime

Nah, fuck you. Asgard sucked

First season of Kekkai Sensen if it counts.

>look how barebones and boring Kai was.
I completely disagree, the filler in the first season was fine because it was well in line with the story already there and occurred in between major plot points without getting in their way, but that quickly changes.
It quickly starts getting in the way and only serves to pad out the episodes, it often conflicts with a character's characterization, conflicts with things further down the story, repeats the exact same beats and often makes the characters look stupider because it takes longer for them to get what is happening with the filler shoved in.
DBZ's filler is only okay before Freiza comes into the picture because before then it tries to fill in the gaps but after it tries to pad the main story.
That's ultimately what filler does, pad things out at the expense of pace, consistency and ultimately filler doesn't matter because it can't change the characters, that's for the creator alone to do.

GitS had pretty decent filler episodes

That's the innate problem with filler, it repeats the same beats and can't progress a character, and that's "good" filler, bad filler clashes with the character or changes them in a way that conflicts with later turns.
