Anime had really good animation, the beginning of the manga also had potential. After the part that it's the movie it was a race to the end game.

It's one of those things where the high production and quality of the anime makes the manga out to be far better than it actually is. Judged on its own merits, it's a pretty meh series with a very generic plot and cast of characters, with some pretty decent action thrown into the mix. But yes, you would expect a series as popular as DS to be at least somewhat special, but it's just bang average so far as shonen goes.

Matter of perspective really. It's not bad and at least it didn't do what many popular shonen do, which is to keep going far past the point it should have ended on at the great expense of story quality ala One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. I think it ended before it got the chance to become genuinely bad like those three became, so there is that.

That said, DS was never really as good as those series were in their prime.

Most shounen don't excel at the feel aspect like KnY. Where most shounen focus in the cool factor, KnY focus in the emtional factor. that have a more subtle way to attract people but also harder to do.

KnY most definitely focuses on trying to be cool, and I don't know how many Shounen you've read or watched, but many of them also try to tug on the readers' heartstrings often; that's why so many characters in series like OP and Naruto have a tragic sob story to tell in the middle of an arc.

KnY does those tragic sob stories better than Naruto or OP ever did. The most iconic moment of the manga was never the cool moments, it was always the somber ones.

KnY tapped deeply into the Fujoforce, something that other Shounen manga only really dipped their toes into. It's decent enough to garner a large male following, but it's Fujoness guarantees the support of an endless horde of female consumers.
