Doesn't seem like the reporter wanted him to "fail", whatever that means in this context. It's more that he's a big name in the industry and people think everyone cares about the money side of things. That and looking to spark controversy by hoping Miyazaki would shit talk KnY probably. Even if you cared about the money side of things I don't know why the reporter thought Miyazaki would care that a 20 year old movie he was involved in getting surpassed in box office revenue. I doubt most people involved in anime wouldn't care, let alone Miyazaki.
