Well, according to the prophecy, the sword is supposed to reappear, so someone stole it and may try to use it. The question is if it's just symbolic (sword doesn't actually exist, but "something deadly and ancient that changes people's fate", perhaps some secret) or an actual magical item (I doubt it, magic doesn't exist).
