Seriously, the 1997 Berserk is perfection. I remember not bothering for a long time because of the old art style. But it truly is a stunning anime, with a lot of story, emotion, and questions you wonder about. And of course its dark and terrifying.
The only other show that comes close so this, bleak sort of realism, is Rainbow (another great anime) and Monster. Is there anything else out there?
best of the berserk anime/movies that have come out but its not perfect 1997 version has almost no moving frames, though it does backgrounds well All other versions are crap even the movies (The cg is still god awful in them)

I tried to give this a watch ages ago, got to EP3 but it all felt really slow?
Can't remember how many episodes, but I watched up until they get off that tutorial island thing. I just couldn't take it seriously some 3dt 10 year old with super strength? lol.
Nah man 1997 Berserk is that good, its the atmosphere, the music, it conveys so much even in still shots. I thought the movies were decent enough. The New Berserk, I mean I liked it because its more Berserk (and the ost is good) but the animation quality is so bad.
You are a man of taste. Berserk is special, it's hard to articulate just how much feeling it accomplishes despite being something of a slide show. The effect is perfect, few anime manage to capture and create such a strong atmosphere.
Also, best OP and ED Check out Penpals and Silver Fins' other stuff, both are awesome

All Berserk 1997 had to do to get so great was to be reasonably true to the source material, and add in a great soundtrack. It is such an incredible shame that someone couldn't just continue this with the newer Berserk manga arcs. It should be so simple. Instead we get the garbage that is 2016.

Based? based on what?

>I remember not bothering for a long time because of the old art style. literally the only redeeming quality.
>the manga art goes into painstaking detail showing gore, miura even shows the skill required to defeat fully armoured foes. in this manga plate armour might as well be cloth since apparently simple slashes are all it takes >half the cast and extras are inexplicably black or darkskinned for no apparent reason, it's as if they're actively trying to be contrarian and go against Miura's established colour schemes. Zodd is not supposed to be red. Midland General Julius is not supposed to be the same skintone as Casca - he's supposed to be a pale blonde like his son >doesn't even show skull knight or rickert's survival - leaving everything a nonsensical mess. As a result, if you didn't read the manga and only had to see the 1997 anime, Godot's and Erika's presence is basically a waste of time.
>It is such an incredible shame that someone couldn't just continue this with the newer Berserk manga arcs It would have been absolutely retarded seeing as how they inexplicably cut Puck, the based Guardians of Desire arc, etc.

This good, but not that good. Still the best Berserk adaptation and one of my personal favorites to come out of the late 90s.

>old artstyle put you off call me a fag, but i prefer it over modern animation because aesthetics

i gave monster a try and got hooked by how interesting the premise is. By episode 20 something it slows down almost to a halt, that and college shit made me drop it for good. Does it pick up, should i give it another go?
Yeah definitely pick it up. You probably couldn't help lose interest coz you had other matters on your mind. It's definitely the best thriller anime I've seen, lot of episodes but they're all good, no fillers, very creepy at times and explores what 'evil' is, along with a lot of other subjects.

What I see: no new chapters in the past two years.

Girls Last Tour, maybe?

At this exact moment I knew I had been experiencing kino
Its true that it is slow, but the characters grows on you, so if you are willing to put in the time it could be worth. I get nostalgic thinking about the first time I watched it and its setting. If you want something more lighthearted but in the same vein (although episodic), I can recommend you Master Keaton (same manga author as Monster).

It's better, but I have a feeling about half of the people who put Berserk on a pedestal are going to dismiss it before watching simply because it's got cute potatoes for protagonists and it's slice of life.
Thanks for restoring my faith a bit in humanity. I thought I was going crazy when I showed 2 of my friends Berserk and they thought it was really mediocre.
