If we are only talking about him as a father he was okay, aside fron cheating on his wife, he tried to be a good father figure, he tried to correct Rudy and make him grow as a person, he tried his best after the calamity, and he was able to save his son's life in his last moment. Rudy did a lot of wrong things too if we take into account he was a man in a child's body, but is important to recognize that he was basically a manchild in his previous life so almost all his personality and growth came from being Rudy, and he made some mistakes learning what a "normal" person would have learnt by his actual age.

Who gives a shit what he "tried" to be? He was a shit father. He blamed his goddamn son for something he wasn't even aware of. Rudy barely survived the disaster himself and also had to worry about Eris, who was basically useless at this point. Paul is a fucking cunt who can't solve shit by himself so he has to rely on his son. He's also to blame for Norn hating Rudy for a while because he provoked him enough for Rudy to beat him up. Even worse, even when they made up, he didn't even correct Norn properly and just let her hate Rudy for a while. Paul is a straight up piece of shit.

There was an entire chapter explaining why Paul was retarded here. Rudy and everyone else got teleported away, Rudy was teleported to the worst place of them all and did his best to fucking survive, only to come back and get smacked up the face and told he's a faggot because he didn't save everyone else. While his dad somehow forgets that Rudy is like nine years old. Even if he's technically older on the inside, he's basically a child at this point.

Another adventurer took Paul into the sewers to fight some monsters and point out the fact that "Rudy had to fight shit like this or 10x stronger every day to survive in the place he was teleported to, and he had to do it while protecting someone else, he didn't have time to worry about other people and survive, but even then he still did. Only to be blamed for it when he managed to come back home alive"

Someone who wasn't a protagonist would have just been dead in Rudy's shoes after being teleported to that place. And yet he made it back home alive, only for his drunken loser father to be a total mess and beat him. Paul was a fucking mess who almost destroyed himself for no reason, it took someone to come around and tell him why he was a fucking asshole before he realized what a mess he was, and got his life back in order again.

Not all the time, but then what does being a manchild even mean? He was able to recognize he had responsibilities, sure he got the maid preggers but after that he was a normal father and when he was half deadbeat it was because he was being pushed to the limit, he did react bad to Rudy but he was a pretty abnormal child who acted really weird and mature, later on he realizes his mistakes.
He is a medieval swordman who wasn't smart at all and a very young father, I am not saying he did not screw up, but from his persoective his son got a bit rowdy with other kids while being stronger, so he though Rudy was at fault, I am not so sure about this but later he is told the truth and recognizes he should have listened to Rudy, no? And we get a chapter in Paul's perspective explaining that it was weird and tough being able to be a good dad to a super genius son like Rudy.
About Sylphy, he did not want him to be tied to a child from the village, he wanted him to become more mature and gain experience to be able to take decisions later on about what he wanted to do, of course this was irresponsible but Paul being the idiot he is tried to think about it and do what he though best for Rudy the superman.
He was a cunt there, and I also think he deserves blame for the thing about Norn, and this does not excuse him, but as I said, Rudy was basically superman and when he explained to Paul what happened he omitted the bad things because he did not want to make him worry. And Paul became a drunkard after putting his whole effort into searching for his family while managing an organization, so Rudy comes all happy go lucky and talks about his story like a grand adventure, Paul get mad and then Rudy tells him how much of a piece of trash he is. Again, Paul was really in the wrong here, but he is not the worst piece of shit ever.

Sure, he was good at magic, but also never really fought for real before and had a mental block about killing and had to immediately go up against super strong enemies while also protecting an actual little girl that could barely fight. The fact that Paul was a drunkard makes things even worse, because he hadn't even found the rest of his family yet and was already fucking losing it so much he had to rely on his son to do his job for him. He was a complete failure. And this is ignoring the fact that he is a cheater and a literal rapist.
