A purely logical person will see that its a bunch of Psyche 101 and think who tf likes it but for the people that see it for what it is Evangelion can be very effective in bringing out an emotional response

No, Eva was good because it was revolutionary for the medium at the time. The presentation was abysmal. Having those Psych 101 terms flash on screen really quickly un a row, or having the main cast get asked the same question 3 times in a row is not "great presentation" it's just a complete mindfuck that nobody was silly enough to do before.
I can't imagine anybody over the age of 18 watching it today and being emotionally invested.
