There's plenty of Shonen series that no one knows about.

There has to be some people on here who know some shit

Does this count? It's visually like nothing I've seen, while it was inspired by some french author.

I don't know much
Stuff from Garo or Ax does not get scanlated often, unless it has memetic appeal like Nekojiru, and I can't speak japanese

define avant garde for me
is it a weird art style
social commentary
or something else
both?

Would Kaiji and Akagi (or FKMT manga in general) be considered avant garde?

>Kaiji and Akagi
experimental, boundary pushing, unconventional

No.

Punpun ofc

are we including gekiga in that category or not

for sure

Liked Kurayami Dance and I really enjoy shit by dowman and the likes, anything more experimental than that and it's just too wierd for me
Got absolutely filtered by kaiba but I watched it fully

Dowman is pretty good.
I read Voynich for the first time a few months ago and it was amazing, the first chapters went over my head but after some chapters I started getting it.

Morning Two

I think he really shines in his short stories more, like Nickelodeon or Melancholia, but Voynich Hotel was nice.
Abe Youichi, while still not as good, is really good too

Youichi Abe is way better.

Got any personal favourites other than Vanilla Spider, the one with the dicks and Daidai wa? The latter was what got me into him and remains for me his best work

That one was also my favorite. His current series is also really good, Sheeply Horned Witch Rumi.

Oh shit he's doing another one?? Thanks, i'll catch up to date

Fkmt is too easy to understand

Avant garde? Don't you mean "bohème"?
What meaks you think it's avant garde?

you don't know what you're talking about

Look up artsy creators and follow them and the magazines they appear in. There's plenty of "mainstream" stuff that has deep ties to the supposed avant-garde artsy shit. Big Comic for example is one of the biggest manga magazines for adults and is where the guy who Garo was founded to serialize (Sanpei Shirato) has done virtually all his work since 1968. It's actually where a lot of legendary creators did work in their late career or on the side but it also has very mainstream stuff like Golgo 13. The thing is most people who say avant-garde and mention Garo are really just talking about "weird" artstyles (avant-garde has generally become a meaningless phrase in all artistic mediums due to popular use of it). But if we're talking things these "avant-garde" and "artsy" creators and those adjacent to them appeared in then a lot of very popular stuff would fall under the category of these threads like the original Lupin III series or the works of George Akiyama.

Don't I? Tell me then, what makes it avant garde? Did it inspire a movement? Did it innovate? Or was it just an artist doing what he wanted to do, in which case it qualifies as bohemian.
