You misunderstood my post. They end up together for a few years but she loses her own identity one more because of it. She dies somewhere off screen and all we're told is that she's probably buried beneath a large tree that has her red ribbon tied to one of its branches.

Both die. Part of the movie happens many decades after Violet's final steps as a Doll, which is what we see from her perspectiveduring most of the movie.

The main point of the movie is conveying a legacy; showing that even though the protag lost her own battle, the stuff she wrote for people as a Doll is still around.
Hell, the movie itself is a letter. It cuts to a black screen with a word on it on many occasions, and when you put said words together they form a farewell message. It gets quite meta desu.
