That scene wasn't very good but that happened because of one confounding factor after the other. The person that sacrificed his life for him and acknowledged him became an international kill-on-sight criminal and Naruto felt like he couldn't keep the promise he made to a friend of his to save him.
People deal with shock and stress differently and it's actually pretty amazing that this scene occurred 50 volumes into the series.
Positive people have their limits and are humans too. They're not just permanently smilling robots.
