the author doesn't really take a side, they just want to make an interesting , fun-to-read shit storm with some characterisation that sometimes makes sense.
You can tell the author knows that the MC is pathetic from
>the shadows covering the mc's face when he tells his daughter that he loves kii and he cares more about going to look for her than his daughter never forgiving him
>the MC's ridiculous, stupid and hypocritical good guy act where he suggested they confront kii's mother and tell her she was being a bad parent

this movie is hypocritical in exactly the same way the MC is when he acts like "we shouldn't do this , I want to help you"
American beauty basically sells titilation to men who all fantasise about how hot it would be to fuck a 16 year old when they're in their 40s and so it gives them that sexual titilation to vicariously live through that taboo pleasure they can't do themselves. BUT at the same time american beauty tries to preserve the ego and internal image of the audience as "good guys" by then having kevin spacey turn down the teenager after flirting with her and eyefucking her , as though this shows that him and the audience are such good guys.
But this is hypocritical because most of the appeal of the movie until that point was the vicarious titilation of fucking a 16 year old.
So why be fake and then at the end pretend "oh we're actually such good guys, we don't want to fuck 16 year olds"?
this is just hypocritical inauthentic bullshit .
This is why My daughter's friend, with an MC who (eventually) disregards slave morality and authentically reaches for what he wants is much more honest and sincere and worthy than American Beauty which tries to pander and sell titilation of seducing 16 year olds while also trying to hypocritically reassure the audience that they're actually "good guys"
