Fairy Tail is the second major work of Hiro Mashima after Rave Master. It came out in 2006 and contains quite a few throwbacks to Rave.

Last volume Dimaria was defeated at the cost of Chelia's magic, Jacob was beaten by Natsu and Lucy and Neinhart was introduced. Sabertooth and Pegasus are down, as well as Erza.

In fairness it's probably not that inconsistent with the Ice Trail spin off that showed how Gray came to Fairy Tail. Specifically the flashback where Gildarts met Ur and was impressed by her strength as she'd already defeated the first form of a monster he'd arrived on a job to defeat.
