Is anime incapable of horror? There's never been a genuinely scary anime, the closest thing is probably Lain or Paranoia Agent. There's manga thats really creepy, like junji itos stuff, or especially Fuan No Tane, and scary j-horror films, as well as some of yhe most frightening pieces of fiction ever with games like Silent Hill and Siren, but it's never been pulled off like that in anime. Can the new Uzumaki finally do it?

When the fuck is this getting released? It was supposed to come out back in January wasn't it?

They said recently that its still in steady development, I worry for it though. Hopefully it doesn't die in COVID hell.

I really hope not. I'm excited for it

news on Uzumaki this Saturday. Maybe a new trailer and a release date

horror manga don’t work either. ito’s stories are interesting and the art is nice, but i don’t ever feel terror or scared. maybe somber

There's so much terror you can convey with a drawing, so of course movies and video games will be much better for conveying it.

Have you read Fuan No Tane? It genuinely made me uneasy.

Shiki and Higurashi both have pretty unsettling concepts with great atmospheric soundtracks
how good the execution was, that depends on the person watching
I personally wouldn't call either of them exceptional, but I enjoyed my time with them

Come back when any medium manages to produce horror that isn't just suddenly blasting you with loud sounds.

Obviously it can see Perfect Blue which wasn't flawless anyway. It's just the industry is focusing on shounenshitters, otakus and pedos.

>Can the new Uzumaki finally do it?
>anime storyboards are simple copypaste of the manga panels
It's going to be shit and you know it.

Perfect Blue is still better than most horror from any medium.

The Blood series is pretty creepy. I picked it up after Tarantino recommended it a while back.
Didn't know about this. Cheers.

I'd say a couple of arcs in mononoke, bakeneko 2 as a normal movie would have a great horror atmosphere with the fucking underground.

Have you seen Perfect Blue?

Yes, anime only works with cute characters doing cute things

Devilman's a pretty damn solid horror manga

Horror works in anime when it plays into anime's strengths. Things like Promised Neverland and Made in Abyss and even Lain and Paranoia Agent manage to be scary because they utilize moe in juxtaposition with the horror aspects. The Junji Ito collection doesn't work because the aesthetic doesn't work animated. I hope Uzumaki proves me wrong but my hopes aren't high.

The music is the only thing I care about and so far it's fucking top tier

Higurashi works because of it's slow pace and subtlety, the anime was pretty shit compared to the VN. I think it CAN be done, but it requires a very good director and production company. The main issue is that you can make a book or a VN with one guy or a very small team, but you need a lot of manpower and funds to make an anime.
Probably when the age of ultra-low-budget 3DCG/AI animated shows created by one autist starts we'll see a lot of great horror anime.

Mystery anime are where you can pull off scares the most efficiently
Shinsekai Yori, Early Detective Conan and Kindaichi all had terrifying scenes

This, Shinsekai Yori episode 19 is scarier than most horror films I've watched

As this user saidShiki is pretty frightening for the most part of it.
Horror anime is possible. Another started as a good concept as well .
If you want to go more towards realism then Chao;child was plenty good as well

Conan will never be this based again ;_; why even live?
t. Watched all of conans + movies + ovas

Most of what people recognize as horror genre is just cheap and dumb jumpscare, everyone with an age over 9 can come up with a plot for that kind of "horror". On the contrary writing a work which really instill terror into the reader/watcher's psyche for a long time after finishing it requires a lot of work, effort and time, too much for the greed producers to invest since they only care about money.

Yes, forgot to mention it. One of the few great examples.
Devilman is badass but not in any regard scary.
