Shinji could die only once, this wretch died so many times he began using it as means of escaping uncomfortable situations, but then just as he began to acclimate to things, he got checkpointed farther into the future and many of his fuckups remained unresolved because of it. He's a flawed man that's being toyed with and tormented by powers beyond his understanding or capacity to oppose and has absolutely zero chance of victory despite busting his ass off.
