I thought people were quick to move on to different anime since Accel World never got any updates. Back then Isekai wasn't that big yet and trapped into a video game was still seen as a novelty the only similiar anime were SAO and Log Horizon. People who liked Accel World for it's concept just jumped to those shows and Accel World was quickly forgotten as some flavor of the month. The franchise and the LN are probably still selling well but it never reached the same popularity as SAO as it isn't talked about as much.

I never said it flopped, just that it didn't become as popular as SAO despite having a lot in common. Same author, aired the same year and similiar premise. Accel World was discussed quite a lot while it aired but the discussion died out pretty quickly as people moved on to the next thing. Look at this thread, it has been up for hours but only has a handfull of posts. I don't know about the sales, from what I know the LN is still doing fine, but it's pretty noteable how Accel World never became as big as similiar franchises despite the favourable circumstances.

Yeah, but I really understand him.
Hand drawn robot animations and gorgeous backgrounds really did the job. And the OST was a total banger too (2nd one being the best IMHO).
It's kinda the same situation as with Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon - one studio did such a good job that I can't imagine another one coming even close to this level.
