Pre-Evangelion Gainax was an interesting beast. It formed from the ooze of obsessive college Otaku, blending their passions, talents, and autism into an unstoppable concoction.
Well, for a while at least.
Was Panty and Stocking the last good thing made under Gainax's roof, over a decade ago now? They've shot the goo a few times since then (with ever decreasing frequency), but I've never seen anything to indicate their few products and more ephemeral promises/projects have turned out more than mediocre.

it's not like there's really anything going on under Gainax's roof anyways but shuffling money to avoid more lawsuits. Feel bad for Shouji since he got stuck with the shittiest management at both Gainax and Shaft
Gainax is entirely dead at this point. Trigger is wholly it's own thing now and despite having former Gainax staff, they either make series which are worse versions of Gainax shows or they make shows that are mediocre altogether.

I'm aware, but I don't know what they could possibly be doing, even now. I know there was that board takeover, yet it's not like Gainax's management was entirely overrun. At most now they're just kept from fucking up harder
Ik 90s japan was the lost decade and all but man it seems like such a comfy time and place to live. Imagine watching Eva on its original airing, buying video cassettes of your favorite anime, attending conventions. The sheer amount of talent that came out of Gainax is basically unprecedented
It's a short about girls that want to do hula but it's lolsorandomxd humor which doesn't really do well since none of the characters are all that notable and it has no budget whatsoever.
I love that poster because of how Daicon is leading the way. Fucking crazy to me that a handful of nerd friends making fun homemade amvs for local festivals would spawn one of the best animation studios in history.
Man, Gurren Lagann was so good. I just finished rewatching it today and I had so much fun.
To me, it is the best. Apex story telling.
Eva's definitely my favorite Gainax work, tho it's pretty different from majority of their output despite how influential it was to them as well.
It was just as engaging now as it was a decade ago.
You can definitely see the same hallmarks of that direction in Kare Kano, but that's really the only one that comes close. It's unfortunate Anno didn't have as much direct control over more projects
Kind of seems like Anno has abandoned anime at this point. Feels like he's only finishing the rebuilds out of obligation
There are parts of Nadia that clearly foreshadow Eva stylistically.
If he did they'd never come out.
Finally Rebuild will soon be out of the way. I can't believe that thing wasted everyone's time for nearly 2 decades. Hopefully Khara will work on more projects like Ryuu no Haisha and Animator Expo afterwards, so many talented people doing nothing of value for so long was criminal.
In the meantime, there are Shin Ultraman, SSSS Dynazenon and Cyberpunk Edgerunners to look forward to.
I don't know. I get the impression he's just doing whatever the fuck he wants at this point. Hopefully at least Tsurumaki will be released from eva captivity once the rebuilds are over but I doubt Khara will ever truly move on.
That's true. That's probably around when he starts developing the directing identity he would fully adopt for eva, since I didn't get a lot of that from gunbuster, despite it still being pretty characteristic in the later half
Between the accessiblity of emerging technology, room for pioneering creatives to get their products out there, demand for weird whacky shit, the financial boom Japan had in the 80s and the mentality of Otaku in the 70s and 80s it was the perfect storm for Gainax to spring up.
I think there are true Otaku out there who still want to make cool anime but good luck doing that today. A lot of shit would have to change for something like that to be able to spring up again.
The thing about 'true Otaku' is that I could ask thousand people who fashion themselves otaku "would you like to spend five years drawing eight hours a day on top of your shitty job to cover the costs to make your own stuff?"
In the 80's and 90's people did that all the time like Gainax because they loved what they were doing. Now the answer is either "no" or "who is paying me?".
