Gintama went to shit by going too much into the story and away from the gags, Sket Dance only suffered from being less crazy than Gintama so some of the gags were not as fun and there were just boring chapters here and there as a result. The Sket Dance characters had more heart, but both manga had such huge problems with the ending. Gintama for dragging it out for so goddamn long I began to hate the manga and Sket Dance by just fucking blowing it all to shit right at the end. One of the worst manga endings I have ever read. I'd like to re-read both of them with the knowledge of their ending in mind so I don't get my hopes up but can remember why I enjoyed them so much before they ended.

Yes, he was his assistant. Lots of assistants make manga similar to the one they worked on. Also most Jump authors were the assistant of some other Jump author or at least have had their own assistants make manga in Jump.

Gintama was way crazier with the gags so I find it funnier, but Sket Dance handled the drama parts better.The drama in Gintama always came off as cheesy instead of touching.

Much of the drama in Gintama felt weird because they constantly make fun of complex dramatic stories. So when Gintama does a complex dramatic story, we expect it to be some kind of joke with a punchline that never arrives.
