it depends on the war.
There are many wars where soldiers on both sides respect each other even as they do atrocities to each other. They tend to avoid words directly associated with killing when speaking of their jobs in order to dissociate themselves from what they are doing.
Other wars, dehumanization is a pretty big factor. There is no respect and the atrocities are that much worse.
