You took the wrong message from Lee. The entire Chunin Exams is basically Gai facing that he is a poor teacher, that's his arc. Lee cripples himself in a prelim match against an opponent that he has no actual emotional connection to, had he made a good showing at conceded then it would've proven maturity, but instead he cripples himself and goads a human weapon into trying to kill him.

Gai basically pours all his attention onto Lee because of his disability. Neji was going to kill a cousin because he places all blame onto her for his crappy life despite her not using the brain hurting seal at any moment and winning the preliminary that has no weight towards your promotion. He's unstable as fuck and Gai's response is to almost let him kill his cousin rather than pulling him from the Exam the moment he decided to try to kill her. Neji supposedly has never shown Gai the Roatation move, but has worked with Lee enough to open the Gates which is supposedly hard and requires innate talent to get past the third.

Kakashi literally points out that Lee is either talented or a Genius to get as far as he did with the Gates, and Kakashi despite his faults restrains most of his students when he can. A lot of it is off-screened, but Kakashi is forced into letting Sasuke fight when he would rather pull him multiple times.

I wouldn't say that's the message of the arc. Gai is definitely a bold teacher who is willing to allow Lee to take big risks if it means meeting his dream, but that doesn't make him a bad one.
