The whole black rose arc is a single bonus chapter in the manga.

Was he? It has been a long while since i watched it.

that's why the manga sucks, among other reasons (btw the anime isn't an adaptation of it, they were made concurrently)

The Utena manga is terrible.

hell yeah, him and his arc is basically one giant parallel to...everything, really. it's like a roadmap for the story itself, really fucky shit if you sit down and think about it. Mikage being eerily similar to Akio and Utena, the Nemuro Hall story being a lot like Ohtori Academy's situation, etc.

The manga is the adaptation but manga adaptations of anime generally start first with just a general idea of what the story is and then allowed to do what they want.

I don't particularly like Utena to begin with but I liked some of the story elements in the manga more than in the anime (maybe this is partially because I read the manga before watching the anime). Maybe I'm just stupid but the whole ending sequence of the anime seemed pretty incoherent to me and just Ikuhara throwing shit at a wall and seeing what would stick. Nanami not being in the manga is a travesty though.

a lot of people don't understand Utena in general, let alone the ending. I 100% understand it tho (keep in mind that the whole thing is pretty open to interpretation, there is no one absolute answer), we actually had a string of threads discussing the story here on Zig Forums like 3 months back

>don't understand the ending
That is surely impossible since the themes of the series are practically beaten into you.

I was expecting more from this series but its just simple symbolism at the end of the day.

what, you don't really think that swords are dicks and roses are vaginas and that's it? that's an extremely shallow interpretation user, far too much work and thought have went into this for you to stop there so smugly

>swords are dicks and roses are vaginas
All of Akio's symbolism is literally that simple. All of his signifiers relate to his bitterness and that leading to destruction of self and his environment.

For example:
>state that you need purity to succeed
>decide to immediately destroy that purity
How deep do you think this series is? Akio didn't even want to succeed, he just enjoyed raising roses and plucking them. It's an interesting narrative but not that deep.

>recap episode
>seemingly pointless fluff in framing scenes
>ends up as most explosive episode of series
Ikuhara is a fucking madman and I love him.

I just remembered now how I lost interest in discussing the series here, this is such a stale and boring view of it all, I'm not sure where to start.

I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say.

Because we won't suck off your retarded analysis? I've seen everyone's deep dive of this series and its some serious reaching on all accounts.

I bet you're one of those fags that thinks FLCL is nothing but "a boy growing up"

Never got the point of this arc.

you are thick-skulled as fuck and nowhere near as clever as you think

It's a coming of age story, that's exactly what it is. Everything on screen is symbolism or a metaphor of that purpose. Also FLCL is fucking trash, don't even mention it again

And yet you won't post any of your amazing Utena takes in this thread? Enlighten us oh gigabrain to how the lyrics with intelligent sounding words mean something when you grasp at straws. All the interesting parts of Utena are the fact that it chooses to be coy with its character interactions. Everything revolves around the major themes and the rest is just circlejerking by pseuds that aren't intelligent enough to analyse a really challenging piece of film or literature.

thank you, it's a lot to post and I'm not currently in the mood to write out walls of text, but check out Utena threads that were made between August and November, you'll find a lot of interesting discussions there

I enjoyed his arc but I don't remember anything from it other than the Wakaba episode. It was filler, good filler.

there is anime more pretentious than Utena with its "deep" moments?

Utena isn't pretentious, its fans are.

Some of its fans are. I loved it and I'm one of the posters who got shit on for saying the symbolism was good but not so deep. And it isn't. The creators clearly outline the major themes over and over in the form of the individual episode stories, the duel lyrics, the visuals.

the wakaba duel theme is one of my favorite of all time. The vengeful simmer in the instrumentals and crying out of the vocals. All choregraphed.

the show may not be very deep but its reinforcement of the themes is almost breathtaking. No matter how many times I think about or watch utena I always see something new or have some sort of revelation that I didn't before. It reminded me of the first time I watched evangelion though in eva a lot of things are explained outside of the show which puts utena ontop being fully contained no other explanations to dilute the narrative

Because you don't see some things it doesn't mean other people can't find them or have different interpretations. Some shows click with some people and not with others, it's normal.

>Because you don't see some things
I caught every little bit of symbolism in this series, go fuck yourself pseud

>or have different interpretations
Aka fucking bullshit

You can proceed to fuck off to wherever you normally go since you are "so tired" of being on Zig Forums. Go on, fuck off.

>since you are "so tired" of being on Zig Forums
When did I say that? Take your meds, user.

>I just remembered now how I lost interest in discussing the series here, this is such a stale and boring view of it all, I'm not sure where to start.
That was your retarded pseud post, dimwit. Nobody in here is posting the hot takes you so desire so why don't you fuck off to where they do? I have no doubt it is a forum and therefore confirms the kind of human garbage you are.
