He's goddamn right. Everybody is like that. What we see in fictional works with people who fall in love with another and they are a perfect couple and love everything from each other (secrets and all) when they just met is goddamn unrealistic or extremely rare. The odds are extremely low.
The correct way to do it is kinda what he initially did: Never show your true self. Just show some parts and kinda build a facade arround them, but you can't go far from the truth, otherwise it'll fall down. Then once your obejctive is complete, you can show, little by little, your true self, like a leaking tap, and, of course, still keep your most disgusting secrets within you (and if possible, forget about them)
I guess that's Aka idea of realistic romantic relationships.
