Unpopular Opinion

Akira’s overrated. Yes the animation is STUNNING for the 80s but the plot? I just don’t feel like I know the characters. It seems like every other anime that has a catastrophic explosion, corrupt government and dystopian society. It’s just very cliche to me. I’m sorry. I don’t think it’s terrible but it just wasn’t worth the 2+ hours it lasted

I don't think that's very unpopular.

Maybe it's cause I read the manga, but I found the movie to be worth it. Also cliche and overrated, I feel like you can attempt to make a better 'critique' than that. I can understand your point about the characters though.

So basically, it was Promare with a bigger budget.

Promare looked like shit. Literally an optical migraine in movie form.

>every other anime that has a catastrophic explosion, corrupt government and dystopian society
how many of those came out after Akira?

Good point. Perhaps Akira inspired many works after it. It’s definitely influential

This, OP don't realize that Akira was one of the first if not the first (I don't think so) cyberpunk anime, what Akira did in terms plot wasn't cliche at the time, or at least it wasn't so overused like now.

The best Akira poster.

Jin-Roh's overrated. Yes the animation is STUNNING for the 90s but the plot? I just don’t feel like I know the characters. It seems like every other anime that has a catastrophic explosion, corrupt government and dystopian society. It’s just very cliche to me. I’m sorry. I don’t think it’s terrible but it just wasn’t worth the 1.5+ hours it lasted

Hunter x Hunter is good but it's not the best anime/manga ever. (this is an unpopular opinion outside Zig Forums)

I actually haven't seen the movie. But I bought the 30th anniversary box set for the manga. Can't say that it was worth it for me. I enjoyed it but not as much as I thought I would. Maybe I need to reread it again

I think the murdering biker gang protag is pretty atypical, good sound, good animation, and genre defining.

seems like japan really has a thing for catastrophic explosions

Calling something overrated is never an unpopular opinion.

What about calling something underrated?

>I just don’t feel like I know the characters
Are you retarded? There was plenty of character introduction, development, backstory, emotional attachment and conclusion to them. The only way you could not know the characters, if you already decided before watching that you only watch it for the animation. Or because none of the girls are moe-blobs.

>Akira’s overrated
Shut up, there is no such thing as overrated if talking about the opinion of a group instead of an individual.

All the cliches you’re taking about?
Yah, it probably spurred many of them in the first place...
It’s not cliche, your entire frame of reference is cliche

It would have been great if it didn't turn into psychic babble.

That's not a particularly unpopular opinion here, where contrarianism is literally expected of you.

Space cobra was before it and explored all these things.

Most people agree Akira is overrated but it's a solid watch regardless.

That's all of anime. Every animation from Japan is overrated.

I agree with this more than the OP. Yes, Akira is shallow but it's not really trying to be something other than a flashy action movie. Jin-Roh spends too much time making weak attempts to try to convince you that there's something more going on than dumb action but it never actually succeeds.

go back

I want this in poster form

A lot of the problems I had with the Akira movie were solved by the better translation. I saw it recently for the 4K rerelease at the cinema and the plot made perfect sense. It was perfectly paced and there was no ambiguity except with the ending where it lets you decide what you think happened to Tetsuo.

The manga is better for being a longer story but the movie is excellent and deserves its acclaim

You're understanding it on a very surface level. The film is really about the problems of puberty and body changes.

Every single day someone calls Akira overrated so no it is not an unpopular opinion in the slightest

Utena fag pls go

I remember I became a giant mutant baby monster when I went through puberty too. I never stopped being one either.

Metaphor is lost on the autistic.

It does have something deeper with the running symbolism of red riding hood and the wolf throughout the movie, but it's just so hamfisted and in your face. I don't know if that's partly because of growing up in the west where the story is very well known and japanese audiences wouldn't be as familiar with it, but regardless it's not well done. The focus on the mc's PTSD is really bad too. One minute he can't fire a gun in training exercises, but all of a sudden he is gunning down guys in the sewer no problem? The characters are so underdeveloped it's painful to watch, which is a shame, because the animation is fantastic throughout

>he is gunning down guys in the sewer no problem
He barely escapes the sewers alive you are a fucking retard

Yeah he sure is barely escaping here user. Fucking retard
