My high school experience sucked, as did I'm sure most people's. No one I know IRL has told me they enjoyed high school. I guess so many adults are miserable about having bad high schools they try to romanticize it and live vicariously through a fictional high school they get to create in the show.

Mine wasn't bad. Sucked at first but got better each year. I think high school settings in Japanese stuff is similar to college settings in American stuff: it is seen as a time of freedom just before real life begins.
